Chapter Five

Roxy

Going to the reunion filled me with nerves, but that’s nothing compared to what I’m about to do. Am I seriously getting a tattoo? As in, permanent ink on my body?

Yes, I am. This is something I need to do for myself. I’m done being the quiet girl treated horribly in high school. My life is happening now, not in the past. It’s time I took my life back, starting with getting a tattoo.

I’ve always dreamed of having one, so now is my chance. Nate is one of the state’s best tattoo artists—I checked. After we met, I looked him up online. There’s no one I trust more than him.

Nate parks the car and unlocks the door to the tattoo shop. It looks kind of eerie in the dark. We step over the threshold, and he flicks a light switch on.

“I’m closing these, so we don’t have any onlookers,” he says, pulling the blinds. “All you need to do is relax.”

I sit down and eye the tools he spreads on a metal tray. Sterile needles, bottles of ink, a stencil of the tattoo I chose, and some other stuff.

“It’s not too late to back out.”

“I’m not backing out,” I say, and I mean it.

Am I scared? Absolutely. Will I get the tattoo anyway? Hell, yeah. It’s getting inked into my skin forever tonight. This tattoo will bind me to Nate forever, even if we don’t end up together, and this will all be nothing but a memory.

Whoa, end up together? Where are these thoughts coming from? It’s true that I like him a lot, but I don’t know if he feels the same. Then again, if the kisses he gave me were fake, he should get an Oscar for his performance.

“Ready?” he asks, putting on a pair of surgical gloves.

I nod.

Nate cleans my shoulder with rubbing alcohol before placing the stencil on my skin. The gesture is unexpectedly intimate. He works focused and fast, like a true professional.

So far, I’m feeling great, but when Nate grabs the tattoo gun, my nerves are back in full swing.

“If you want to stop at any time, tell me, okay?”

“I will.”

The needle touches my skin, and I close my eyes. It hurts, but less than I thought it would. Instead of focusing on the pain, I listen to the sound of the tattoo gun and Nate’s breathing. It’s calming me somehow.

When he finally puts the device down, I’m relieved it’s already over. “Can I take a look?”

He picks up a bottle of pink ink. “Don’t you want to wait until it’s ready?”

“Oh, it’s not?”

“No, I only just started doing the contours.”

Shit. How ridiculous of me to think I could get a tattoo in less than five minutes. Nate goes back to work, and I need something to distract me.

“How long have you had your shop?” I ask him.

“A few years now. I worked as a freelancer at another tattoo shop until I had enough money saved to start my own business. It’s a dream come true.
